Brussels extinguishes Fire Festival
Party goers in Perpignan in France had a nasty surprise at some new health and safety rules this Bastille Day.
The yearly Fire Run event which attracts thousands of spectators and participants was unable to enjoy the usual frantic firework fun as beurecratic Brussels decided that there should be a 15 Metres (thats about 50 feet imperial) gap between the crowd and the pyro.
The tradition is for catalonians dressed like devils and demons to run amok with their fireworks.
Stephane Martin is from the Catalan Devils and Demons Federation, he went all the way to Brussels on Wednesay to personally protest against the safety regulations and to ask for a special cultural exemption. Spain already has said exemption but the far smaller Catalan population in France is having to battle hard to win the right to be dangerous with fireworks.
Oriole Junqueras, a Spanish Catalan MEP, has taken up the cause in France. “We have been doing this for centuries without danger or injuries. Our traditions are under threat,” he said
We all understand the need to be safe with fireworks and it is important to ensure the safety of people at such events. However the events have been going on for longer than anyone who attends them has been alive. Surely anyone who goes should understand any risks they are taking and make their own decision whether to go or not.
Tradition has to be preserved, it is part of the culture and important to make a community feel like a community. We hope a happy compromise can be reached and the Catalan people can enjoy their traditions.
SAFETY RULES 6-23-10
FIREWORKS SAFETY RULES
YOUR SAFETY IS OUR MOST IMPORTANT CONCERN
WE PUBLISH THESE RULES ON EACH SACK THAT WE PUT THE CUSTOMER’S PURCHASE IN FOR A HANDY WAY TO REVIEW AND REMEMBER THESE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
Here are safety rules to remember before you shoot fireworks.
With the advent of the mortar kits in the past few years and the wide acceptance by the public, its paramount that the following be a part of your show preparations:
First block the tube with a concrete block or rock so that it cannot tip over during firing. Next unwind the fuse on the shell, place it in the tube with the top part up where the fuse attaches bringing the fuse out to the top of the tube. Then slightly pull the fuse to be sure that the shell is able to move. Then light and get back. Shelton’s offers more than 60 kinds of mortar kits.
On the aerial tubes be absolutely sure that they are blocked with a concrete block or rock so that there is no way that they can tip over during firing. Shelton offers more than 100 kinds of aerial tubes.
On aerial rockets, the use of PVC pipe can serve as a launch device and has to be anchored so that it cannot tip over during the firing. This can be done by placing it in heavy sand, or a bucket of sand with its launch heading just the direction that you desire. Shelton’s offers more than 50 kinds of rockets.
On aerial multi-firers, using a concrete block would prevent them from accidentally turning over and shooting at your crowd.
Prior to dark on your shooting date, look at each item you are going to be using in your show and be sure where the fuse is located so you don’t have to fumble around in the dark trying to find it. We recommend having the fuses all turned in the same direction.
1. Always read and follow label directions.
2. Have an adult present.
3. Buy from reliable sellers.
4. Use outdoors only.
5. Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).
6. Never experiment or make your own fireworks.
7. Light only one firework at a time.
8. Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water).
9. Never give fireworks to small children.
10. If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
11. Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in your trashcan.
12. Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
13. Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
14. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
15. The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.
16. Stay away from illegal explosives.
FINALLY——NEVER, NEVER, TRY TO TRANSPORT FIREWORKS ON AIRPLANES. NO-NO-NO.

India’s Fireworks

Searching the globe for interesting fireworks information turns up a not so well known manufacturing giant, outside of China! The area around Sivakasi, in the Southern part of India is home to as many as 1,000 fireworks factories and is responsible for up to 90% of India’s fireworks production including both professional display, and consumer fireworks.
India’s culture celebrates many religious festivals with fireworks, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to meet their own demands, they are it seems though, one of the few countries who manufactures more fireworks than they import.
Fireworks here are largely created using ancient methods, although the industry didn’t really take off until the 1920′s it thrives and is taking steps toward mechanizing the processes for safety and production purposes, hopefully making them a contender in the global market in the near future.
Similar to China, firecrackers are a mainstay item in India, and one of the local favorites is called the Jute Twine Bomb, a very loud firecracker that is also used for agriculture and scaring birds away from airport runways.
The yearly average temperature of around 89 degrees, and the mainly dry climate makes it an excellent area for production, although the low humidity can also create some safety concerns.
India produced fireworks are known for high quality construction and raw materials, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find supply of and largely control market pricing. Who knows when fireworks produced in India might be available in your area!
