Old Wakefield Firework Posters
This is a very rare treat for the firework shop list. We have not 1 but 3 Firework posters from the 1800 from my home town Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Courtesy of Twixt Aire and Calder.
First image up is a Firework poster in the 1840 at the wakefield market place opposite the Strafford Arms Inn on Tuesday January 16th Contributions were to be collected from the audience. After the fireworks, Mr Gyngell would give a performance of his illusions at the Mechanics’ Institute on Wood Street.
Second image is another firework display poster from 1846 opposite the Corn Exchange, Westgate. The poster reads A handbill for a display of French, Italian and Chinese fireworks to take place on Monday 9th March 1846 opposite the Corn Exchange, Westgate, Wakefield, later Argos superstore. The display was to be given by Mr L.V.Gyngell from the Royal Gardens, Vauxhall, with contributions being collected from spectators.
Third and final image, A firework posater for the Grand Gala at Wakefield Zoological Gardens, 1844. Poster reads, Grand gala and firework display at Wakefield Zoological Gardens on September 18th 1844 accompanied by a band. The Zoological Gardens were opened on Back Lane on 10th July 1839 by Mr Russell. On 1st June 1844, a bear escaped from its enclosure, where it attacked a Mrs Hazelgrove who lived within the gardens. She tragically died within a week. This led to the zoo’s closure shortly after.
This is a very rare glimps into the past of firework event in Yorkshire. Once again i would like to thank Twixt Aire and Calder for letting me use these images.
Four smaller displays instead of Victoria Park annual firework display
TOWER Hamlets Council has decided to cancel the annual November fireworks display at Victoria Park.
Cost-cutting measures by the council, which has to save £55 million from this year’s budget, have forced the popular show to be called off.
Instead there will be four ‘community-based’ events across the borough which will remain free at King Edward Memorial Park, Mile End Stadium, Millwall Park and Weaver’s Fields.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “The Victoria Park fireworks event has been successful for many years, but for too long the council has footed the entire bill for the event despite most of the people who go there living outside of the borough.
“In taking this decision, I wanted to make sure that our residents are the people who really benefit from our fantastic firework displays. We’re taking the displays out to the people of this borough.
“We are making it more accessible to our residents and giving thousands more local families a chance to enjoy fireworks for free.”
The Victoria Park display regularly attracts tens of thousands of fans from across London and is designed with a different theme every year.
But the council said it had listened to local residents, some of whom have complained at mass-participation events, in making the decision.

Background: The fireworks show at Fair Park, which the city was hoping to make an annual tradition, was canceled last week, a victim of tight budgets for the city and Friends of Fair Park, which sponsored the event. This week,Caraway said he was angry that city staff did not make it happen somehow.
What’s new: Caraway said Tuesday the show will go on, but he did not yet have details. “That is in motion,” he said. “We’re about to resolve it.” Caraway said an announcement will come soon.
City official’s response: That’s news to him, said Fair Park general manager Daniel Huerta. “We would be thrilled if the sponsorship dollars came through and would diligently work with friends, sponsors, DPD and DFD and others to make it a safe and high quality fun event,” he said in an e-mail.
Nuclear Powered Fireworks
If nuclear power stations were built on the moon and they did fireworks displays it might look something similar to this.
