Liberty Park fireworks to go despite oil leak
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – An annual fireworks show celebrating Utah’s Pioneer Day is scheduled to go on despite an oil leak last month that eventually made its way into the pond at Liberty Park, where many people gather to watch the display.
Crowds are expected to reach 50,000 by the time of the show on Saturday evening.
Officials for Chevron Corp. and city leaders say there’s nothing to worry about at the park. They say preparations for the holiday have been under way for weeks.
Chevron believes the June 12 33,000-gallon oil leak into Red Butte Creek was caused by a short in a power line that traveled through a utility fence post to melt a hole in the pipe’s casing.
