Town Council has approved putting a non-binding poll question on the municipal election ballot in March Silver City voters will get a chance to weigh in on whether they want to ban fireworks in the southwest New Mexico community.
The Town Council has voted to put a non-binding poll question on the ballot next March asking voters if they want to ban fireworks altogether. The Town Council enacted an ordinance in September that cuts down the sales period for fireworks from 17 days for the Fourth of July holiday to just five days, June 30 to July 4, and cuts the December selling period from seven days to four, Dec. 28-31.
Two councilors have been pushing to have the poll question on the municipal election ballot to get a read on the residents’ opinion on fireworks, while two others have been against using the ballot as a method to conduct the poll. Councilor Tom Nupp cast the deciding vote in Tuesday’s 3-2 approval of including the poll question on the March ballot.

Amongst the novelties for the Olymics opening-ceremony fireworks will be smiley-face shape shells, the Chinese authorities said today in an announcement about their plans. They are part of a theme – to be reflected on staff and volunteer clothing – to soften China’s authoritarian image.

Cai Guoqiang, the artistic director for the fireworks, announced that fireworks would be launched from a staggering 1,800 sites around the city of Beijing, including major urban areas near Tiananmen Square and the Bird’s Nest stadium near the Olympic Village.

‘We want the Olympic spirit to be seen and felt throughout the entire city on the evening of the opening ceremonies,’ said Cai, a famous Chinese artist.
