City To Look Into Diwali Fireworks
A request from Hamilton’s Hindu and Sikh communities to allow fireworks during annual Diwali celebrations received support at a city committee yesterday.
The economic development and planning committee has asked staff to review Hamilton’s current fireworks bylaw to see if it should be amended to allow fireworks during Diwali.
“Diwali is one of the oldest festivals in the world,” said Budh Singh Dhillon, in a presentation to the committee.
“Fireworks are embedded in Diwali. There is no Diwali without fireworks and lights.”
Baljit Grewal, a Stoney Creek grocery store owner, applied to the city to be allowed to sell fireworks for Diwali.
“We were shocked to find out that fireworks are only allowed on Canada Day and Victoria Day,” Dhillon said.
“I’m asking the committee to amend the bylaw to return the glory back to Diwali.”
Dhillon dismissed concerns from fire officials that Diwali fireworks would increase the risk of fires in Hamilton.
“I have not seen any reports that we have more fires in Hamilton celebrating Victoria Day and Canada Day.”
He also noted Brampton, which has a large South Asian community, allows fireworks during Diwali celebrations.
Ward 2 Councillor Bob Bratina said the city should review the bylaw, in part because fire codes have changed since the 1950s, when the fireworks restrictions were enacted.
“We should also acknowledge that the city of Hamilton was a different place in terms of diversity 30 and 40 years ago than it is today.”
Councillor Brian McHattie said he has seen Diwali celebrated in India “and it’s a joyous occasion deeply built into the history and religion.”
World Cup 2010 – Germany vs England 4:1 — GNYB — Week 09
Watching the FIFA Soccer/Football/Fussball/Fútbol/etc. World Cup in Germany is best done outside. It seems that every bar, cafe, restaurant and public place has a TV or projection screen outside. This means you don’t have to miss a match while enjoying the gorgeous European summer. It also means you can’t really escape it. Best to embrace it. This past Saturday, Jessica (visiting from Thailand) and I watched, worried, hollered and jumped around with the masses at the Schulterblatt in Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel neighborhood as Germany beat England 4:1 — allowing Germany to move up to the next round where they will now meet Argentina this Saturday. It is still strange for me to see a bunch of German flags and other decorations and outfits in the nation’s colors. This is not because I’ve been living in the US for so long, but because up until the 2002 World Cup in Germany, Germans didn’t really do that. The shame we carry from the events of the Third Reich still weigh so heavily on most of us that signs of national pride have mostly been considered to be offensive or embarrassing. I’m not sure if the ability to begin embracing the national identity is something that has to do with a generation walking around that has no personal connection anymore with anyone who was alive during the 30s and 40s or if just enough time has passed since the horrors of the WWII. But I still have mixed feelings about excessive displays of national pride. It’s nice to think we don’t have to be …

Background: The fireworks show at Fair Park, which the city was hoping to make an annual tradition, was canceled last week, a victim of tight budgets for the city and Friends of Fair Park, which sponsored the event. This week,Caraway said he was angry that city staff did not make it happen somehow.
What’s new: Caraway said Tuesday the show will go on, but he did not yet have details. “That is in motion,” he said. “We’re about to resolve it.” Caraway said an announcement will come soon.
City official’s response: That’s news to him, said Fair Park general manager Daniel Huerta. “We would be thrilled if the sponsorship dollars came through and would diligently work with friends, sponsors, DPD and DFD and others to make it a safe and high quality fun event,” he said in an e-mail.
